Real bad.
I was sitting across from a very nice women and her rat terrier, Alice.
She had worked with a veterinary behaviorist for SEVEN years on her dog’s reactive behavior.
SEVEN YEARS!
A reactive dog is defined as lunging, barks, pulls and basically blows a gasket at the sight of another dog or person.
If you think the above dog is uncommon think again. Dog owners spend YEARS trying to train their reactive dogs because they get very bad advice.
I belong to a few reactive dog groups on Facebook and it makes me sad to read how the owners and dogs suffer for years with the reactive behavior.
You see, dog owners are told to use treats to fix their dog’s reactive behavior. They are told to redirect, and then shove buckets of chicken into the dog’s mouth. They are told to keep a distance, to do U-turns, and duck into alleys and driveways when the dog becomes reactive.
None of which help fix the problem.
Which means the dog owner dreads taking their dog for a walk. Which results in a dog that lives a very limited, boring, sheltered life.
And it does NOT have to be this way.
A month ago an old friend I worked with in Connecticut contacted me and asked for help. She had been dealing with her reactive border terrier for five years and wanted help.
My friend Maria told me she had been to a few different trainers but was still dealing with the reactive behavior. As she described her dog’s behavior I told her if she was willing to make the trip to my school we could help her dog in just one session.
How could I diagnose her dog and make the big promise of helping her in one session without ever meeting the dog?
Here is what happened in Maria’s words:
“I have been living with a very reactive Border Terrier for the past five years. I went to a training class in my area and got zero results. I had worked with Eric years ago in Newington, CT and finally being completely exasperated with my dog’s behavior around other dogs, I made the two hour trip from Manchester, CT to see Eric at his dog training school in Westport, MA for a training session.
He told me he could help me in one 45 minute session.I was skeptical but he was right. In just one session (and in less than 45 minutes) he got my out control, barking, pulling on leash dog completely under control and calm around other dogs. I was truly amazed at how clearly and calmly he helped me teach my dog to behave around other dogs. If you’re looking for the BEST dog trainer, go to Eric Letendre’s Dog Training School in Westport, MA!”
So many dog owners deal with their dog’s reactive behavior for years and it does not have to be this way.
Most dogs can be fixed in less than 30 minutes and BTW, I do NOT use prong, shock or choke collars to to help reactive dogs.
Anyway, if you or someone you know is dealing with reactive behavior and would like some help we offer a free reactive behavior consultation.
